February 2004

    We are now IVF Patients! Slawek and I have decided to stop pursuing IUI at this point. Of course, my period has not arrived yet (so there is still a chance) ~ but, I called our Repro Endo today and opted to skip IUIs and go straight for IVF/ICSI. Our RE instructed us to go for IVF/ICSI during our first consultation anyway ~ but we decided to take it slowly and try 3 cycles of IUI first. Our insurance is being very vague as to whether they are going to count IUI as one of our 6 (covered) fertility attempts (which include IVF/ICSI), we simply can't risk losing the coverage. IVF/ICSI costs $10,000-$15,000 per cycle. IUI costs $400 per cycle.

    So... here is our schedule:

    03/25/04 - 11:30 am IVF INPATIENT APPT
    * 1/2 hr. w/ financial consultant
    * 1 hour with Dr. Scheiber
    (ultrasound, bloodwork, mock embryo transfer, uterus measurement w/ catheter)

    03/26/04 - FULL DAY ~ EDUCATION DAY
    * 2 hour new patient initiation (info)
    * 1 hour with nurses (instructions on meds)
    * 1 hour with nurses (instructions on injection administration)

    The IVF Nurse informed me that IVF is a 50-day cycle (with the suppression phase included). And if I start my AF right before 03/25 ~ I should call and have CD3 bloodwork run (if we want to use March as IVF Cycle 1).

    Please God ~ watch over us....

    Today was our follow-up consultation with Slawek's Urologist (Dr. Tsuang). Good news: the Prostate infection is completely gone now. Dr. Tsuang prescribed Clomid (50 mg.) for Slawek to take for 25 days straight. He takes a break for 5 days, and then takes the Clomid for 25 more days. Slawek will continue the Clomid prescription until we are successfully pregnant! Now Slawek and I are BOTH on Clomid. I told him he is my Clomid Buddy. Next appt. with the Urologist is in May 2004.

    We did it! IUI#1 completed! Slawek's PRE Wash info - Count: 12 million (6 million x 2 ml. volume), 10% motility, grade 1. Slawek's POST Wash info - Count: 13 million, 10% motility, grade 1. Dr. Scheiber wasn't too happy with the 10% motility, but like he said today - it only takes 1! So, we are now in the 2WW (2 Week-Wait). In 15 days (Leap Day 2/29) I am to call for a Beta pregnancy test (blood test) if AF (Aunt Flo) hasn't arrived. Keep your fingers crossed that Cupid hit the mark.

    CD9 Ultrasound showed 3 follicles in various stages of maturing (20 mm, 12 mm, 12 mm each). My endometrial lining is 8.5. We are READY TO GO for IUI#1. Tonight, 2/12/04, Slawek will administer the hCG 10,000 unit injection, which will trigger the eggs to rupture from the follicle. Saturday, Valentine's Day! 02/14/04, we report to Dr. Scheiber at 8 am. Slawek provides his 'stuff' - which is washed. The IUI procedure is scheduled for 9:30 am. Keep your fingers crossed for a blessed Valentine's Day Baby. Come on Cupid, help us out here!

    Round #1 IUI (Intra-Uterine Insemination): 100 mg. Clomid taken CD3 - CD7. CD9 Follicle ultrasound 02/12/04. As soon as Dr. Scheiber tells us my egg(s) are mature, Slawek will administer the hCG injection (which will trigger all egg(s) to rupture from the follicle). The next day, we will do the IUI procedure in Dr. Scheiber's Office.

    On February 6, 2004, Slawek and I met with our Reproductive Endocrinologist - Dr. Scheiber at the Cincinnati Institute for Reproductive Health. He advised that we need some serious infertility treatments, as we have less than a 1% chance of ever conceiving naturally. We decided on a plan: IUI (Intra-Uterine Insemination) for 3 cycles. We were told NOT to get our hopes up. By May 2004, if we still are not pregnant, we are going straight for IVF (InVitro Fertilization) with ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection). Please keep us in your prayers.
